India State of Forest Report (ISFR) 2019
•Mangrove cover has been separately reported in the ISFR 2019 and the total mangrove cover in the country is 4,975 sq km.
•An increase of 54 sq Km in mangrove cover has been observed as compared to the previous assessment of 2017
•Top three states showing mangrove cover increase are Gujarat (37 sq km) followed by Maharashtra (16 sq km) and Odisha (8 sq km).
•The extent of bamboo bearing area of the country has been estimated 16.00 million hectare. [There is an increase of 0.32 million hectare]
Madan Mohan Malaviya:-( 1861–1946)
•He was an Indian educationist and politician notable for his role in the Indian independence movement and as the four times president of Indian National Congress
•He was awarded the Bharat Ratna posthumously in 2014
•He was the editor of the ‘Indian Opinion’.
•He was instrumental in founding the Benares Hindu University in 1916 and also became its Vice-Chancellor.
•He worked for the temple entry of Dalits at the Kalaram Temple at Nashik
Hong Kong convention
•The Hong Kong International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships, 2009 (the Hong Kong Convention),
•It was adopted at a diplomatic conference held in Hong Kong, China in 2009
[adopted by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) ]
•The Convention is aimed at ensuring that ships, when being recycled after reaching the end of their operational lives, do not pose any unnecessary risks to human health, safety and to the environment.
[The Convention is yet to come into force because it has not been ratified by 15 nations]
•India ratified the convention on 28 November 2019.
One Planet One City Challenge”
•It’s a friendly competition, organized by World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) to mobilize cities to deliver on the Paris Agreement.
•The black-and white panda (a Giant Panda) is the logo of World Wide Fund for Nature.
